Tony Nominations Droppin': Will Da Culture Get Some Love?
79th Tony noms comin' Tuesday, but will they recognize the real talent or keep playin' the same old game?
Aight, so the Tony nominations droppin' Tuesday, ya heard? The 79th annual, supposed to be about celebrating the best on Broadway. But let's keep it 100, will they actually show love to the culture or just keep recycling the same old privileged folks?
Broadway been doin' its thing for years, but it ain't always been representin' for the real. Too often, it's the same stories, same faces, same kinda folk gettin' all the shine. We gotta see if the Tony's gonna switch it up this year or keep the gatekeepers gatekeepin'.
We need to see more Black playwrights, Black actors, Black directors gettin' nominated. Not just for the 'urban' plays, neither. We talkin' about excellence across the board. If they claimin' to celebrate the best, then the best from our community gotta be in that mix.
This ain't just about awards, either. A Tony nomination can change a whole career. It opens doors, brings in money, and lets people know you're serious about your craft. Denying us that opportunity is just another way of keepin' us down.
We gotta look at the whole system, too. Who's on the nominating committee? Are they even familiar with the Black theatre scene? If they ain't, then how they gonna judge fairly? It's like havin' someone who only listens to country music judge a hip-hop competition.
And let's not forget the folks behind the scenes. The stagehands, the costume designers, the lighting techs – they all contribute to the magic of Broadway, and many of them are Black and Brown. They deserve recognition too, even if they ain't on stage.
I'm talkin' 'bout real representation, not just tokenism. We don't want no pity nominations. We want to see genuine talent gettin' the respect it deserves. We gotta hold these institutions accountable and make sure they put their money where their mouth is.
So when them nominations drop, we gotta be watchin' close. See who's gettin' recognized and who's gettin' left out. If it's the same old song and dance, then we gotta keep speakin' up and demandin' change. No more crumbs, we want the whole damn cake.
It's time for Broadway to reflect the diversity of America. We need stories that resonate with all of us, not just a select few. The Tony Awards have a responsibility to uplift and celebrate all voices, especially those that have been historically marginalized.
Keep it real, though. The theatre is still too often a space where there is not enough acknowledgement for the talent coming from the real streets, or the real neighborhoods. This needs to change.
This Tuesday, all eyes will be on the Tonys to see if they walking the walk, or just talking the talk. Word to ya motha.
The 79th Tony nominations dropping soon, we gon' see if the culture getting proper love or if it's just business as usual. Stay woke, y'all.
