They Messin' With Grand Army Plaza Now? Brooklyn Folks Gotta Speak Up
Mamdani's redesign plan got folks talkin' at the market – but is it really for us, or just for them?
Aight, so word on the street is they tryna change up Grand Army Plaza. This dude Mamdani got some kinda plan to make it more 'pedestrian-friendly.' I heard it was all the buzz at the farmers market dis past Saturday. Now, I'm all for making things easier for folks walkin', especially the elders, but I gotta wonder, who's this really for?
Grand Army Plaza is a landmark, man. It's been there for ages. My grandma used to tell me stories 'bout going there when she was a kid. So, they better not mess it up too much. Gotta keep it real, you know? It's more than just a plaza. It's a piece of Brooklyn history. But, like everything else in NYC, they always tryna change things. Sometimes it's for the better, but most of the time...it's just gentrification.
'Pedestrian-friendly' can mean a lot of things. Sometimes it just means gettin' rid of parking so bougie businesses can open up and price us outta our own neighborhood. They puttin in new bike lanes no one use, and raise up the rent on everybody
That farmers market? Yeah, it's cool to have fresh produce, but let's be real, the prices ain't for everybody. Most people can’t afford that organic mess, they shopping at Western Beef. Are they gonna make it more affordable for the neighborhood? Or just make it look prettier for the tourists?
Mamdani, whoever he is, needs to come down to the block and talk to the real people. Not just the ones sippin' kombucha at the farmers market. He needs to ask us what we need. Better bus service? Safer crosswalks? More affordable housing nearby? He better listen up because we gon’ be mad if this turns into another gentrification scheme.
They buildin' these luxury condos near Prospect Park too that no one from the block can afford! Why not create more housing opportunities for black and brown people in the area?
I'm all for improvements, but they gotta make sure it benefits everybody, not just the folks who can afford it. We gotta hold them accountable and make sure they don't forget about the community that built this place.
