The Feds Are Playing Games with Our Mail: USPS Threatens to Stop Delivering Ballots If States Don’t Hand Over Our Private Info
Postmaster General David Steiner dropped a bomb in Congress, saying they'll straight up hold back your mail-in ballots if your state doesn't give them the voter list.
The feds are back at it again, and this time they’re playing games with our mail and our votes. On Wednesday, Postmaster General David Steiner stood in front of a Senate committee and dropped some real shady news. He said if a new rule goes through, the USPS is going to straight-up refuse to deliver mail-in ballots to any state that doesn't hand over their lists of who requested those ballots. Let that sink in: they want our private voter info, and if the states don't comply, your vote gets held hostage in a postal warehouse.
This is a major power trip from the people at the top. For a lot of folks in our neighborhoods, mail-in voting isn't some luxury—it’s the only way to make our voices heard. When you’re working double shifts, taking care of the kids, or don’t have a car to get to a polling place, standing in a four-hour line on a Tuesday just isn’t happening. Mail-in voting was supposed to make things equal, but now the feds are trying to use it as a bargaining chip.
Let’s keep it 100: this is all about control. The feds are trying to force the states’ hands by demanding these voter rolls, which have all kinds of private information like names, home addresses, and who is asking for a ballot. Under Article I, Section 4 of the Constitution, the states are supposed to be in charge of running their own elections. But now the USPS is trying to act like the landlord, threatening to shut off the lights if the states don't play by their rules.
And what happens to the regular people caught in the middle of this political chess match? If your state decides to protect your privacy and refuses to hand over the lists, the USPS is basically saying, "Too bad, we aren't delivering your ballot." That means millions of people, especially in working-class communities and neighborhoods of color, could end up getting completely locked out of the election. It’s a dirty tactic that hurts the most vulnerable people first.
We already know how hard it is to get things delivered on time in our communities, but now they want to make it even harder by adding these political roadblocks. The National Voter Registration Act of 1993 was put in place to protect our right to vote, not to give the federal government an excuse to withhold our mail. If they can just decide to stop delivering ballots because of a political dispute, what’s next? Are they going to stop delivering our government checks or medications because they don't like state policies?
This proposed rule is a wake-up call. We can't let them use the postal service as a weapon to suppress our votes or dig into our private data. The politicians are going to fight this out in court, and you know the lawsuits are coming, but we have to keep our eyes open. They want to make it harder for us to vote, and we have to stay ready to fight for our rights, no matter what kind of hurdles they try to put in our way.
