No Cap, They’re Already Beefing: Old Head Alf Dubs Tells Andy Burnham to Settle the Home Office Drama and Bin the Asylum Bill
A 93-year-old Kindertransport survivor tells the incoming PM to fire Shabana Mahmood over some shady plans to lock up sick kids.

Man, the ink ain't even dry on Keir Starmer’s resignation letter and the whole government is already moving shady. Before the new boss Andy Burnham can even set up his office on July 17, the Labour Party is straight-up fighting in the streets over immigration. Lord Alf Dubs, this 93-year-old peer who people call the 'conscience of the Labour movement,' just came out swinging. He’s telling Burnham to kick Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood out of her job and completely trash her new asylum plans, calling them nothing but 'performative cruelty.' Dubs ain't playing with these people, and he’s telling the new PM to clean house immediately.
This whole mess is blowing up because Mahmood is trying to drop a brand new asylum and immigration bill this coming Tuesday, and the details are wild. We are talking about making it easy for the feds to put handcuffs on little kids before they deport them, and even kicking out sick kids who are just trying to get by. On top of that, they want to stop letting families reunite and retroactively change the rules on 'indefinite leave to remain.' That means if you came here years ago, did everything by the book, and played clean, they can still try to switch up the rules on you after the fact. Dubs called that straight-up unjust, and honestly, he's keeping it 100.
Dubs has got the receipts to back up his talk, too. Back in 1939, when he was just a six-year-old kid, he had to flee Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia on the Kindertransport train, which was set up by a stockbroker named Sir Nicholas Winton. Dubs is telling everyone straight up: if these new rules were around when he was a kid, he would’ve been left 'out in the cold' with nowhere to go. He’s saying they would’ve slapped handcuffs on him and shipped him right back, even though he had family in the UK ready to look after him. He’s saying that’s not what British values are about, and it’s definitely not what Labour is supposed to stand for.
But it gets even crazier behind the scenes. While they’re drawing up plans to lock up kids, Mahmood is locked in a petty beef with Starmer over her immigration minister, Mike Tapp. Word on the street is Tapp got caught trying to pass off Mahmood's immigration plans as his own work. You’ve got grown politicians in the middle of a massive leadership transition beefing over who gets the credit for a bill that puts sick kids in handcuffs. The absolute audacity of these people is unreal. They're more worried about their political clout than the actual lives they're messing with.
