Jason Collins, That NBA Bruh Who Came Out, Done Passed at 47
Real talk: He showed mad courage droppin' that 'I'm gay' bomb while still ballin', gotta respect the realness.
Aight, so I just heard Jason Collins, that big dude from the NBA who came out the closet back in the day, he gone now. 47 years old, damn. That's too soon, man. No cap.
For folks who don't remember, this dude wasn't no superstar. He was a solid center, played hard, did his job. But his biggest moment was when he told the world he was gay. That was some real sh*t, especially in the NBA, where everybody tryna be all macho and tough.
He dropped that bomb in Sports Illustrated, said, “I’m a 34-year-old N.B.A. center. I’m Black and I’m gay.” Can you imagine the pressure? The hate he probably got from some of these closed-minded cats? But he stood tall, didn't back down. Gotta respect that.
See, the NBA is a whole different world. It's a business, first of all. And these players are brands. So for him to risk all that, the endorsements, the career, just to be real with himself? That takes guts, yo.
Some people probably clowned him, called him names, all that ignorant sh*t. But he also opened doors for other athletes who might be scared to be themselves. He showed 'em it's possible to be Black, a baller, and gay, all at the same time. That's a powerful message for the youngstas.
After he came out, he became an advocate, speakin' out for LGBTQ+ rights. He used his platform for something real, something bigger than basketball. That's what it's all about, right? Liftin' up your community, makin' a difference.
So, yeah, Jason Collins might not be remembered for scorin' 30 points a game. But he'll be remembered for bein' a real dude, a brave dude, who wasn't afraid to be himself in a world that often tries to force you into a box.
Rest in power, big homie. You did your thing. You showed these kids what it means to be authentic, even when it ain't easy. We salute you for keepin' it 100.
It's a sad day, but also a day to remember the impact one person can have. Jason Collins was more than just a basketball player, he was a role model. His legacy will live on, no doubt.
