ICE Gone, Funds Gone: Minneapolis Immigrant Fam Still Hustlin' After Metro Surge Mess
Feds dipped, but the struggle real out here, and these mutual aid groups ain't got the bread no more to hold it down for the community.

MINNEAPOLIS — Aight, so check it. Operation Metro Surge done came and went, ICE was out here snatchin' folks, terrorizin' neighborhoods. But even though them boys in blue ain't around no more, the aftershocks still hittin' hard, ya dig? These immigrant families still tryna bounce back, but the support system lookin' shaky as hell.
Juntos Podemos, one of them mutual aid crews that be tryna keep folks fed and housed, just threw a fundraiser at Arbiter Brewing Company. They was lookin' to scoop up 20 bands, but only pulled in 15. Anai Tepozteco, one of the heads of the operation, sayin' donations took a nosedive since the feds packed up in February. Man, that's cold.
Operation Metro Surge wasn't no joke. ICE was rollin' deep, snatchin' up over 3,000 people. Two US citizens got caught in the crossfire and lost they life. Now that the heat died down, everybody act like everything cool, but these families still feelin' the squeeze.
Folks lost they jobs, went into hiding, stressin' 'bout rent. Paola, this Ecuadorian sister, told NPR she strugglin' to make ends meet since her man got deported back in '25. She went ghost for two months during the surge, and now she behind on everything. Real talk.
HOME Line, this tenant advocacy org, droppin' knowledge that eviction filings jumped 26% in Minneapolis since last April. Numbers don't lie, fam. People is hurtin'.
Sulia Altenberg, who runnin' a rent relief program in her hood, ain't seein' no love either. She say she only got eight dollars overnight. Eight dollars! That's a slap in the face. The community gotta do better than that, man.
This ain't just 'bout the money, though. It's 'bout the fact that these families been through some real trauma. They need support, they need resources, and they need folks to keep it 100 and not forget about them just 'cause the news cycle done moved on.
We gotta keep the pressure on, hold these politicians accountable, and make sure these families get the help they need to get back on they feet. This ain't a game. This is real life for real people.
At the end of the day, we gotta look out for each other, 'cause ain't nobody else gonna do it for us. Stay strong, stay resilient, and keep grindin'.
