'94 World Cup: That's When Soccer Tried to Slide into the Mainstream, Fam
Real talk: that World Cup was supposed to make us all soccer fans, but did it really change the game for the hood?

Aight, so check it: they saying that '94 World Cup was the jumpoff for soccer in the US. Before that, nobody was really checkin' for it, ya feel me? Now they tryna say it changed the whole game, made everybody fall in love. But let's keep it 100, did it really though?
Before '94, soccer was that sport white folks played in the suburbs. We was busy with hoops, football, the real sports. Then all of a sudden, BAM, World Cup in our backyard. They built stadiums, hype it up on TV, the whole nine.
They showin' fans from everywhere, talkin' 'bout unity and all that. But in the hood, we still grindin', still tryna make ends meet. Did the World Cup put food on the table? Nah. Did it change the block? Nah.
Then they start this MLS thing in '96. Tryna get us to pay for tickets to watch dudes run around for 90 minutes and barely score. We good, fam. We got more important things to worry 'bout.
They keep pushin' the women's team too, sayin' they makin' soccer popular. Salute to the queens, but let's be real, they still fightin' for equal pay and respect. The struggle real, even on the soccer field.
Now they talkin' 'bout the 2026 World Cup comin' back. Bet. More money for the big corporations, more gentrification in the cities. But what about the people in the community? We still gonna be fightin' for scraps.
At the end of the day, soccer might be bigger now, but it ain't really changed the game for us. We still gotta hustle, still gotta look out for each other. Corporate America ain't savin' nobody.
They try to sell us this dream, this idea that soccer is for everybody. But in reality, it's still a sport dominated by the privileged. If you ain't got money for the expensive leagues and training, you ain't really got a shot.
So next time you see somebody rockin' a soccer jersey, remember where you came from. Remember the struggle. Remember that the game ain't always fair.
They want us to believe that soccer is the future. Nah, the future is in our hands. We gotta build our own opportunities, create our own path. We ain't waitin' for nobody to save us.
Keep it real. Soccer ain't gonna solve our problems. It's up to us to make a change. One love, one struggle, one hood.
