Turkey Catches USA Slipping in LA: Defense Was Soft and Pochettino Got Too Fancy with Weah
Sebastian Berhalter showed out and Weston McKennie held down the captain's spot, but a 3-2 loss proves the backline needs to wake up before the knockouts.

Man, the USMNT had a rough night out in LA, dropping a tough 3-2 decision to Turkey. Let’s keep it 100: the defense was straight-up sleeping out there. Coach Mauricio Pochettino got way too fancy with the strategy, trying to act like a mad scientist instead of just letting the boys play. He really put Tim Weah on his weak side because of some "dominant eye" theory. No cap, that made zero sense on the pitch. Weah looked completely out of rhythm, fumbling his touches, giving the ball away, and looking like he was playing out of position—because he was.
And what was going on with Matt Turner in goal? Turkey took three shots and all three went right past him. You can't be giving up a goal on every single shot on target and expect to win at this level. People are already screaming for Matt Freese to get that starting spot, and honestly, you can’t even blame them. Turner had a couple of decent sweeper plays, but three goals on three shots is a bad look, even if he is in that exclusive club of US keepers with multiple World Cup starts.
Down on the defensive flanks, Joe Scally was supposed to be the lock-down, stay-at-home defender compared to guys like Sergiño Dest and Alex Freeman. But Scally got caught lacking, getting pulled out of position twice on Turkey's second goal and struggling to put any decent crosses into the box. It was a tough night for the young man, who just couldn't keep up with the speed of the game in Los Angeles.
In the middle of the defense, Mark McKenzie and Miles Robinson were having a whole disasterclass. McKenzie got cooked easily on the first Turkish goal and his long passes were going nowhere, though he did get robbed of a goal on a corner kick because of an offside call. Robinson was playing super nervous in the first fifteen minutes, turning the ball over and leading the team in phases lost because he couldn't make up his mind on the ball. You can't be hesitating like that when Turkey is coming down your throat.
On the left side, Auston Trusty was playing out of his natural position as a wing-back or full-back, but the man showed real heart. He rose above everybody to head home the opening goal from a corner kick, giving the crowd something to scream about. Trusty was putting in real work on both ends of the pitch, tracking back to stop Turkey's attacks before he had to exit with a bad ankle injury. Pray for his recovery, because we need him.
But look, we gotta give credit where it’s due: Sebastian Berhalter was out there playing like he had something to prove. He dropped a beautiful dime on a corner to assist Trusty for the first goal, and then he scored an absolute rocket from the edge of the box. Berhalter was driving the whole offense as the team's best passer, even if his defensive work was a little shaky. The young man is really building up a reputation for those long-range strikes.
