They Packing Us in Firetraps: Six Dead in Endwell After Parolee allegedly Torches Homeless Motel
Broome County’s raggedy-ass motel shelter program ends in tragedy after a paroled felon is charged with setting the Knights Inn ablaze.

Let’s keep it 100: the system does not care about poor people. On Monday morning around 6:00 a.m., six people lost their lives in a massive fire at the Knights Inn in Endwell, and another 73 are out on the streets with absolutely nothing. This wasn't just some freak accident—this was a disaster waiting to happen. The county was using this motel as a makeshift shelter, packing vulnerable folks into a commercial building because they didn't want to build real, safe housing. Now, six families are grieving, and the streets are asking how this was allowed to happen.
When the Endwell Fire Department pulled up, the place was already a wrap. Heavy black smoke was pouring out the front, and flames were blowing out the back. It went up so fast that people barely had time to move. Neighbors watched as fire trucks and police from all over came rushing in to help, but by the time they got it under control, six bodies were pulled out, and two more had to be rushed to the hospital. Law enforcement hasn’t even released the names of the victims yet, leaving families in the dark and waiting for the worst news of their lives.
The cops locked up 24-year-old Tyler Russell on Monday, charging him with six counts of second-degree manslaughter and one count of arson. Get this: Russell is a paroled felon who was just let out of state prison back in February after doing two years for grand larceny. The state just dumps people back onto the streets with no real plan, no support, and no resources, and then they act surprised when everything goes left. It’s a vicious cycle that keeps spinning, and the poorest people in our community are the ones who pay the price.
The Knights Inn was being used by the Broome County Department of Social Services to house the unhoused. That's how they do it out here—instead of investing in real, permanent housing with proper safety standards and community support, they just buy out cheap motel rooms and call it a day. It’s a temporary band-aid on a massive bullet wound, and this fire showed exactly what happens when you treat human lives like an afterthought.
If it wasn’t for the community stepping up, these 73 displaced folks would be completely left in the cold. The Red Cross came through to help, and the Vestal United Methodist Church opened its doors as a temporary shelter so people had a place to lay their heads. At the same time, the United Way of Broome County had to launch an emergency fund, which raised tens of thousands of dollars from regular people trying to help their neighbors. The community is doing the government's job for them, no cap.
The Endwell Fire Department put out a statement on Facebook, saying: "First and foremost, our deepest thoughts and continuous prayers are with the victims and their families who were impacted by this morning's tragic events. Please know that our entire department and community stand with you during this incredibly difficult time." We appreciate the love and the prayers, but what we really need is accountability from the people running this county and state.
Right now, Russell is locked up in the Broome County Jail waiting for his day in court. The police say they don't know the motive yet, but the streets know the real motive of the system is saving money. They'd rather warehouse the poor in firetraps and let parolees run loose with zero support than actually invest in the hood.
This tragedy needs to be a wake-up call. We can’t keep letting them treat our people like statistics. It’s time to stop the cheap motel housing programs, fix the broken reentry system, and start building real, safe, and permanent homes for the people who need them most. Rest in peace to the six lives we lost, and strength to the survivors trying to rebuild from the ashes.
