They Got JD Vance Out Here Holding the Bag on This Messy-Ass Iran Deal
The VP tried to play both sides, but now he's catching heat from his own team while Trump keeps wilding out on the timeline.

It’s real out here in these political streets. On June 22, 2026, Vice President JD Vance was spotted in Emmen, Switzerland, trying to patch up a shaky-ass ceasefire deal with Iran. This war’s been jumping off since February, and Vance—who used to talk a big game about being against "forever wars" because of his time as a military reporter in Iraq—is now the main guy trying to explain away a massive military mess. It's a tough spot, and everybody can see he’s stressed.
Truth is, Vance has been getting played from the jump on this war. While the big dogs were making plans in the fancy war room down at Mar-a-Lago, Vance was nowhere to be found. They kept him far away from the actual war planning, but behind closed doors, his people were telling reporters that he didn't even want this war. One of his old Senate homies kept it 100, saying Vance was "deeply uncomfortable" with the whole situation but decided to just play along with Trump anyway.
Now, all this playing along is messing up his plans for 2028. Vance was supposed to be the next man up for the presidency, but now he’s losing ground to Marco Rubio. Rubio’s a straight-up foreign policy hawk, and he’s been playing the game perfectly, looking like a professional diplomat while Vance gets stuck doing cleanup duty. If Vance doesn't watch out, his political future is going to slide right out from under him.
Andrew Day from the American Conservative broke down how bad it looks for Vance right now. He wrote that Vance is representing an administration that’s looking bad with "a spluttering economy, geopolitical decline, and a catastrophic war with Iran." Day basically said the 2028 bag is no longer guaranteed for Vance, and he’s gotta figure out who he really is if he wants to stay in the game.
So, to try and get his respect back, Vance took a huge gamble. He started talking directly to Iran using Pakistani mediators—which is the highest-level meeting we've seen since all the way back in 1979. But to get the deal done, Vance had to offer some massive favors, like lifting sanctions and giving back frozen money. Now, the super-aggressive, pro-Israel crowd in his own party is calling him weak and saying he's getting played by Iran.
To make matters worse, Trump is actively running his mouth and ruining the vibe. While Vance is in Switzerland trying to negotiate, Trump is out here threatening to start bombing again and even talking about taking out the Iranian negotiators. It’s hard to do business when your boss is wilding out on the timeline, leaving you to look crazy in front of the people you’re trying to deal with.
