Straight Tragedy in Chico: Sick Teen Targets the Only Public Library in Town, Taking Out a Local Hero Who Died Protecting His Family
A community already scarred by devastating fires gets hit with a cowardly library shooting, leaving two dead and folks wondering where is safe anymore.

It’s a cold world out here, and things just got a lot heavier in Chico, California. On Monday afternoon, a sick 18-year-old kid named Bradley Scott Sayer decided to pull up to the local public library with a shotgun, opening fire and taking away two lives while injuring a young child. This wasn't some random beef—the feds are saying this kid actually planned a whole "Columbine-type" massacre inside a space meant for families, kids, and people trying to get their lives together.
Now, you gotta understand what this library means to the streets of Chico. In a city of 107,000, this is the only public library they got. It’s a safe haven where parents take their little kids for story time, immigrants learn English to get better jobs, and regular folks who can't afford home WiFi go to handle their business. When the massive Camp Fire destroyed Paradise and Magalia back in 2018, this exact library was the lifeline where displaced survivors went to find help. It’s a sacred community space, and this kid violated it.
According to the police, Sayer—who literally just graduated from Chico High School two weeks ago—showed up around 5:00 PM, right before closing. He did a quick walkthrough of the building to scope it out, went back to his car to grab his shotgun, and came back blasting. He killed his first victim right at the front door before heading inside to fire off more rounds.
But during the worst moment of this nightmare, a real hero stood up. Jacob Cody Hull, a 46-year-old local resident, was in the library with his partner's daughter. When the shots started ringing out, Jacob didn't run or hide. He put his own body on the line, shielding that little girl from the bullets and taking the hit so she could live. His neighbor and friend of 35 years, John Wollam, let it be known that Jacob died a protector, showing the ultimate love for his family.
While the shooter was trying to claim more victims, the library staff held it down. Branch Director Kimberlee Wheeler wasn’t on-site, but she got a text from an employee and was amazed by what her crew did. The staff didn't freeze up; they kept their heads cool and quickly ushered families and kids into locked workrooms to keep them out of Sayer's line of sight.
And for once, the police actually handled business the right way. Chico Police Chief Billy Aldridge said dispatchers heard screaming and gunshots over the 911 calls, and his officers pulled up in under two minutes. Cops were seen on video running straight into the library, and they had Sayer bagged and in cuffs within four minutes of getting there. No hesitation, just straight-up stopping the threat.
