Poet Laureate Drops Zoo Rhymes: Is It Really 'Bout the Animals, Tho'?
Simon Armitage gettin' deep 'bout ZSL's 200 years, but what's it mean for the people on the block?

Aight, so check it. The Zoological Society of London, ZSL for short, hittin' 200 years. To celebrate, they got the Poet Laureate, Simon Armitage, droppin' some bars in a poem called 'The Moon and The Zoo.' Word is, it's got an animation and all that. But I gotta ask, what's this really do for us?
See, they talkin' 'bout how the zoo been inspo for writers like Edwin Landseer and even Winnie-the-Pooh creator A.A. Milne. Sylvia Plath too, apparently. Even Ted Hughes, Plath's dude, used to wash dishes at the zoo. But them folks ain't from around here, ya feel me?
This Armitage cat is tryna paint a picture of the zoo at night, with the moon watchin' over everything. He talkin' 'bout responsibility for the natural world and all that. But where was this responsibility when they was lockin' us up, polluting our communities, and gentrifying our neighborhoods? That's what I wanna know.
He supposedly spent time at the London Zoo, checkin' out spiders and tigers. Went behind the scenes in the reptile house. I bet. But did he go behind the scenes in our communities, seein' how we livin', how we strugglin' just to survive? Doubt it.
He sayin' the moon represents ZSL's 'keeping and caring' and the research they do. But what about the people who ain't got no healthcare, no education, no opportunities? Is the moon keepin' and caring for them too?
He claims the poem is 'bout the 'wonder of the natural world.' But the real wonder is how the system keepin' us down while these institutions pat themselves on the back with fancy poems. It's all good for PR, but what's the real impact, fam?
ZSL opened London Zoo back in 1828. They sayin' it was for science and education. But back then, who was gettin' that education? Who was benefitin' from that science? It sure wasn't us.
The CEO, Kathryn England, sayin' the poem captures the 'wonder' of wildlife encounters. But I'm wonderin' when we gonna have encounters with equal opportunities and real justice. That's the real wildlife we gotta deal with.
This poem might sound nice and look pretty, but don't let it distract you from the bigger picture. They tryna make us feel good 'bout the environment while they still stealin' from our communities. Keep your eyes open, ya heard?
I ain't hatin' on the animals. But I'm sayin' our community need that same care and resources these animals getting.
