Out With the Old Heads: Progressive Rebels Just Ran the Table in the NYC Democratic Primaries
Self-made street politics takes down trust-fund elites and long-time politicians as Zohran Mamdani's crew cleans house.

The streets of New York just sent a loud and clear message to the political establishment: your money and your tenure don't mean nothing anymore. Tuesday’s Democratic primary was a straight-up clean sweep for the candidates backed by the city’s democratic socialist Mayor, Zohran Mamdani. The young progressives came hungry and ate the establishment’s lunch, proving the old political playbook is officially dead.
Let’s start with the biggest upset of the night in the 10th district. Two-term incumbent Representative Dan Goldman got absolutely washed by challenger Brad Lander, losing by a massive 65.7% to 34.1%. Goldman, who is literally a multi-millionaire heir to the Levi Strauss denim fortune, tried to rely on his establishment backing and his history of leading Trump’s first impeachment back in 2019. But the people weren't feeling him, especially with his stance on the Israel-Gaza war. Lander, who had Senator Bernie Sanders and Mayor Mamdani in his corner, kept it real about the war, accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza.
It got so real for Goldman that the local community started shutting him out. A spot called Poetica Coffee in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, went on social media over the weekend and told Goldman he wasn't even welcome inside. When the block starts banning you from getting a cup of coffee, you know your campaign is in critical condition. After getting smoked in the polls, Goldman had to call Lander to congratulate him, admitting the voters had spoken.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump was on his phone late at night, throwing dirt on Goldman’s political grave. Trump called the congressman "weak and pathetic" and bragged that he "just lost, BIG!" Trump also took shots at Mayor Mamdani’s socialist slate, posting that America would "never be a communist country!" Trump’s been calling Mamdani a communist since the mayoral race, but Mamdani just shrugs it off while trying to tax the rich to put resources back into the community.
The upsets didn't stop there. In the 13th district, a doctoral student named Darializa Avila Chevalier, who was out there on the frontlines of the pro-Palestinian protests at Columbia University, just knocked off Adriano Espaillat. Espaillat is a major political boss who held that seat for five terms and runs the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. Chevalier came from the grassroots and took the crown. Mamdani was hyping her up after the win, calling her a person "of clarity, of conscience and of conviction."
To seal the deal, Assemblywoman Claire Valdez beat Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso in the 7th district. That made it a perfect three-for-three night for Mamdani’s crew. Mamdani’s whole movement is about putting the working class over corporations, using tax hikes on the wealthy to fund real programs for the people.
Now, the suits down in Washington are shaking in their boots. Establishment Democrats are already crying that these far-left wins are gonna scare off swing voters in the November midterms. But from the looks of it, New York voters are tired of politicians who fold when things get tough. They want fighters, and Tuesday night, they got them.
