NY Primaries Just Got Shook Up: Street-Level Activists Out Here Ousting the Democratic Establishment
Speaker Mike Johnson is losing his mind over a socialist sweep in New York, but the streets are watching a whole new political game unfold.

The political establishment in New York just got caught sleeping, and the streets just took the keys. In a wild primary turn, three progressive candidates backed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani just swept their races, leaving old-school Democrats wondering what hit them. But while grassroots organizers are celebrating a massive shift in local power, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, R-La., went straight to the microphone on Wednesday to warn that "communism is on our own shores," calling it a "very serious time" for the country.
Let’s keep it 100: these primary wins by Brad Lander, Darializa Avila Chevalier, and Claire Valdez are the real deal because they’re running in deep-blue districts. In these areas, the Democratic primary is the actual fight; November is just a formality. By winning these spots, these three are basically guaranteed a seat in Congress. They ran on a raw, unapologetic platform—taxing the wealthy, getting rid of ICE, and standing firm against the military actions of Israel.
This wasn't just a close race; it was an absolute takeover of the old guard. Darializa Avila Chevalier, a 32-year-old activist, straight up ended the career of Representative Adriano Espaillat, the heavy-hitting chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus who always made sure people knew he was the first former undocumented immigrant in Congress. Meanwhile, Brad Lander knocked out Representative Dan Goldman, an establishment Jewish lawmaker who was dealing with antisemitic attacks at the end of the race. Claire Valdez locked down an open seat to finish the clean sweep.
The policies these new faces are bringing to Washington are as real as it gets. They want a wealth tax to make sure the richest people finally pay up, they want to completely abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) because of how immigration enforcement tears families apart, and they are not holding back on their criticisms of Israel. It’s a complete departure from the moderate, corporate-friendly politics that Democrats have been putting out for years.
But let's talk about Darializa Avila Chevalier, because her background has the media doing double-takes. She was right there on the front lines at Columbia University during the pro-Palestinian protests after the October 7, 2023, attacks. Some of her deleted social media posts got dug up, showing she wrote that "Israel doesn't exist," pushed hard for open borders, and claimed "all deportation is wrong." She has no filter when it comes to speaking her mind on the systems that oppress people.
Now, some of her takes have people in the community talking. Avila Chevalier is all-in on the prison abolition movement, and during an interview with the Substack publication, The New York Editorial Board, she wouldn't even say if a man who committed a random murder should go to jail. She also has zero respect for the top of her own ticket; back in 2021, she called Joe Biden "a rapist" and posted "F--- Kamala Harris" after the former VP went to Guatemala and told people not to come to the U.S. illegally.
Over in the other major race, Brad Lander's win over Dan Goldman showed just how deep the division is over the Middle East. While Goldman was catching hate from antisemitic trolls, Lander—who is also Jewish—secured his win by promising to go to Congress and be a loud, proud voice for the Palestinian cause. It shows that voters in these neighborhoods are tired of the same old foreign policy and want representatives who aren't afraid to speak up for human rights.
Speaker Mike Johnson is looking at all of this and telling the country that "this is not your father's Democrat Party." He’s panicking because the "insurgent left" is actively winning elections and replacing moderate, corporate-friendly politicians with people who actually come from the activist scene. Johnson has been sounding the alarm on this ever since Mayor Zohran Mamdani got his upset win in the city, and now he's seeing that same energy head straight to Washington.
As Lander, Avila Chevalier, and Valdez get ready to take their seats in November, the political landscape is about to look very different. The streets are tired of the same old promises from establishment politicians who don't change anything. Whether you love their policies or think they're wild, these activists are bringing a raw, unfiltered energy to the federal level, and the establishment is officially on notice.
