NT Tryna Lock Up the Yutes: New Law Gives Cops 48 Hours to Hold Down the Homies
They sayin' it's 'bout safety, but we know this just another way to throw young Blackfellas in the system.

DARWIN, Northern Territory – Aight, listen up. The Northern Territory pullin' some straight-up BS with these new youth justice laws. They tryna give the police the green light to hold young bloods for 48 hours without even callin' they folks. That's two whole days they can sweat a kid, no lawyer, no family, nothin'.
This Corrections Minister Gerard Maley the one pushin' this mess. He sayin' it's for public safety, but we see right through that. They wanna lock up young people for any lil' thing and hold 'em down in them watch houses. Then they can grill 'em 'bout any crime they think they know somethin' 'bout. And if it's 'serious and urgent,' they can question 'em without an adult present. That's crazy.
And peep this: they doin' this right after they messin' with the Aboriginal Child Placement Principle. So they tryna snatch the kids and then lock 'em up. You can’t make this stuff up.
Maggie Munn from the Human Rights Law Centre is speakin' facts. She sayin' this gon' hit Indigenous kids the hardest, and she right. They already overrepresented in the system, and this just gon' make it worse. She talkin' 'bout the watch houses bein' overcrowded and nasty already. Now they wanna throw more kids in them cages?
They sayin' it's 'bout keepin' the community safe, but it's really 'bout controllin' the young Blackfellas. They don't care 'bout the kids, they just wanna lock 'em up and throw away the key. How is this any different than what’s been happening? They gotta stop trippin'.
They sayin' they ain't gon' use this law all the time, but we know how that goes. Once they got the power, they gon' abuse it. And they sayin' the kids get to stay silent, but when a cop in your face for 48 hours, how much you think they really gon' stay silent? It's straight pressure.
This is all part of the same game. System tryna break down the community, lock up the young ones, and keep us down. But we ain't goin' for it. We gotta fight back and protect our kids. This ain't 'bout safety, it's 'bout control. They need to check they selves.
We need to support our youth, not cage them. Build programs, not prisons. Teach them their rights, and stand up for them when the system tries to grind them down. It's on us to make a change.
