Moorland on Fire near Glossop: Tintwistle Burning Up and the Woodhead Pass is Locked Down
Real talk, the smoke is hitting everywhere from Bolton to Oldham, and the government is telling people to lock their doors and stay inside as record heat cooks the streets.

Look, Tintwistle Moor is straight up on fire right now, no cap. Out by Glossop, the hills have been burning for over 24 hours straight, and it is absolute chaos. This major wildfire has already chewed through more than 500 square meters of moorland and woods, and the smoke is getting heavy. The local spots like Tintwistle, Hollingworth, and Woolley Bridge are getting choked out by thick black clouds, and the fire crews are out there putting in serious work trying to get the situation under control.
Derbyshire Fire and Rescue put some crazy drone footage on social media, showing the forest getting absolutely eaten up by the flames while the smoke just pours into the sky. It looks like a movie scene, but it's real life. They've had to bring in six fire engines, support teams, and even a water-dropping helicopter to dump water on the flames. The crews are saying they're gonna be out there all through the night on Thursday, fighting to stop this thing from spreading any further.
But the wild part is how far this smoke is traveling. People all the way out in Bolton, Crumpsall, Bury, Oldham, and Rochdale are smelling the smoke clear as day. Ash is literally falling out of the sky and landing in people's gardens and all over their clean whips. The authorities are panicking, telling everyone to stay far away from the area and keep their windows and doors locked shut so they don't breathe in the toxic air.
To make matters worse, they completely locked down the Woodhead Pass (A628). That’s the main highway connecting Manchester and South Yorkshire over the hills, and now it's blocked off in both directions. National Highways shut it down between the A57 for Hollingworth and the A616 for Flouch. If you're trying to get across, they're telling you to take the long way around on the M1, M62, or M60. It’s a total transit headache for anybody trying to get to work or handle their business.
All of this is happening while the UK is absolutely roasting in record June heat. The UK Health Security Agency just pushed their red heat-health alert all the way to 11:00 p.m. on Friday. This is only the second time they've ever had to drop a red alert, so you know the streets are boiling. The Met Office is also keeping their red alert active for south-east England until Friday night. The whole country is basically a tinderbox right now.
The fire department is keeping it 100 about how dry the grass is. They said the ground is tinder dry and warned that the tiniest spark from a campfire, a hot ember from a barbecue, or even some ash falling off a cigarette could start a whole new disaster. They're telling everybody to act responsible because the emergency services are already stretched to the limit trying to handle this massive response.
