Hawaii OG George Ariyoshi Gone at 100: First Asian American Governor, But Was He Really For the People?
Ariyoshi ran things back in the day, but let's keep it 100, did his policies really help the everyday folks in Hawaii?

Yo, Hawaii lost one of its OGs. George Ariyoshi, the first Asian American guvna, just dipped at 100 years young. He was in office from '73 to '86, back when things were kinda different, ya feel me?
Guvna Josh Green talkin' all that good stuff, sayin' Ariyoshi dedicated his life to Hawaii. “Governor Ariyoshi devoted his life to Hawaiʻi with humility, discipline and an unwavering sense of responsibility to the people he served,” Green said. “He led our state during a pivotal moment with quiet strength and integrity, and his legacy as a trailblazer and public servant will endure for generations.” But let's be real, politicians always gonna say that when somebody passes.
Ariyoshi was born to Japanese immigrants in Kalihi, a rough spot back in the day. Pops was a sumo wrestler turned stevedore, grinding to make ends meet. So he came from humble beginnings, no doubt. But did he remember that when he was in office?
He got his start in politics when the Democrats were takin' over Hawaii. That was a time when the lil' man was tryin' to get a piece of the pie. But did Ariyoshi make sure everybody got fed?
He went to college on the mainland, learned the game, and came back to Hawaii to run things. He said he wanted to break barriers for minorities, which is cool. But did he really level the playing field, or just make it easier for a few folks at the top?
Now, Hawaii got mad touristy while he was in charge. That brought in money, but it also drove up the cost of livin'. Regular folks started gettin' priced out, ya know? So was that progress for everybody, or just for the big corporations?
In his book, "With Obligation to All," he talkin' 'bout growin' up with a speech impediment. He overcame that, which is respect. But overcoming personal struggles don't always translate to helpin' the community, know what I'm sayin'?
He was a lawyer before he got into politics. Lawyers make money, but they ain't always lookin' out for the average Joe. So did he change his ways when he got into office, or was he still servin' the interests of the elite?
Look, I ain't hatin' on the man. He did some things, no doubt. But we gotta keep it real and ask if his policies really benefited the people, or just lined the pockets of the rich. Did he really look out for the community? That's the question we gotta ask ourselves.
