Gov'ment Tryna Play Us: Treasury Blocked the Cheaper EV Juice, Keepin' the Pavement Tax High
While rich folks chillin' with home chargers get a break, the rest of us payin' 20% VAT at the public spots, ain't nothin' changed but the date.

Aight, so check it. The Treasury, yeah, them cats runnin' the money, they just curved the plan to drop the VAT on public EV chargers down to 5%. Straight up, they said nah, we good. Meanwhile, Heidi Alexander and them over at the Department for Transport, they was tryna make it happen, but the breadwinners said NOPE. Man, they playin' us.
See, if you got that sweet setup at home, chargrin' your ride in your own garage, you payin' 5% VAT. But if you like most folks, gotta hit up the public charger 'cause you live in an apartment or on the block, you gettin' hit with that full 20%. They callin' it a "pavement tax," and that ain't no cap. It's holdin' back folks from gettin' on the EV wave, especially in the city.
The word is, the Department for Transport was pushin' charger companies to hit up the Treasury, tell 'em how they gon' pass that discount down to the people. And the companies was like, yeah, we'll do it. But Rachel Reeves and them over at the Treasury ain't hearin' it. They worried 'bout losin' money later on when everybody ridin' electric. Like, they can't see the bigger picture, man.
They talkin' 'bout reviewin' public chargrin' costs in the fall, but we already know how that's gonna go. More talk, less action. Meanwhile, this London tax tribunal done said the VAT should be 5% already, 'cause they messed up the law. But HMRC, they appealin' that, tryin' to keep that 20% comin'. It's a whole circus.
This dude Dan Caesar from Electric Vehicles UK, he callin' for that VAT to get canned altogether. Straight up, he right. Make it cheaper for everybody. But the gov'ment ain't tryna hear that. They just worried 'bout their pockets.
And get this, they plannin' on chargin' us 3 pence a mile for drivin' EVs in 2028 to make up for the gas money they ain't gettin' no more. Plus, they might water down that ZEV mandate, makin' it easier for companies to keep sellin' gas guzzlers. They movin' backwards, fam.
The chargrin' companies ain't happy 'bout none of this, 'cause if less people drivin' EVs, they ain't makin' no money. The gov'ment tryna act like they helpin', sayin' they savin' people money on new cars and investin' in the EV game. But it's all smoke and mirrors. They look out for theyself, not us.
Bottom line, this VAT thing just another way the system rigged against the average person. While the rich get richer, we out here strugglin' to keep up. They need to stop playin' games and make EV chargrin' affordable for everybody, not just the folks livin' large. Keep it 100, man.
