Crooks in Lab Coats: Whistleblowers Expose Illinois Hospital Letting Surgeons Sleep on the Job and Scam Patients
Surgical bosses sue OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center, saying doctors went AFK during brain surgery while the hospital ran up the bill.

Look, when you go under the knife, you’re putting your whole life in the hands of the medical staff. You expect them to stay awake, stay in the room, and keep it 100. But a wild 18-page whistleblower lawsuit filed in Winnebago County Circuit Court shows that OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, Illinois, was letting some straight-up shady business go down in their operating rooms, and then punishing the real ones who tried to stop it.
Three former surgical-services bosses—Sofia Gudino, Tina Peppers, and Cindamon Proffitt—were the ones in charge of keeping the OR safe and clean. Starting in late 2023, they noticed the hospital's neurosurgeons were wilding out, taking dangerous shortcuts, and putting lives on the line. But when they took their complaints to the top bosses, the hospital didn't do a single thing to fix it. Instead, they turned around and targeted the whistleblowers.
The details in this lawsuit are absolutely crazy. Back on October 12, 2023, a neurosurgeon was literally caught sleeping against a surgical microscope mid-procedure. Peppers had actually warned the chief medical officer before the surgery started that this doctor was exhausted from working late the night before on top of a full day of surgeries. But the administration let the surgery proceed anyway. Operating on someone's brain while nodding off is a different level of reckless.
And it didn't stop there. On February 3, 2025, two neurosurgeons reportedly left a patient completely knocked out under anesthesia on the operating table for an hour with no surgeon in the room. Then, on April 17, 2025, another neurosurgeon left an anesthetized patient for 37 minutes just to go to a meeting, with another surgeon helping him dip out. They were leaving vulnerable people completely abandoned while they were unconscious.
To make it even sleazier, the hospital was using this empty time to run up the bag. Operating rooms bill by the minute, so while these patients were lying there alone under anesthesia, the hospital was fraudulently and unethically overcharging them. It’s a straight-up hustle—charging people premium prices for minutes where nobody was even there to operate on them.
The lawsuit also says the doctors were doing whatever they wanted: ignoring sterile techniques, failing to count surgical tools, using unapproved gear, and throwing temper tantrums. When the nurses tried to stand up and protect the patients, the surgeons bullied and intimidated them. It was a completely toxic environment where nobody was allowed to speak the truth.
Instead of cleaning up their act, the corporate suits at OSF Saint Anthony decided to go to war with Gudino, Peppers, and Proffitt for speaking up. They retaliated against them and pushed them out of their leadership jobs. This lawsuit is about holding these corporate crooks accountable for putting money over human lives. Shoutout to these three whistleblowers for keeping it real and exposing the rot in the system.
