City and State Drop $495K Bag on Abortion Hotline Expansion, but Mamdani and Hochul Can’t Even Get the Math Right
The state and city are paying for travel and rooms for out-of-towners seeking abortions, but their press releases are short $30,000 on the details.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul are back at it, dropping a fresh $495,000 bag to expand the NYC Abortion Access Hub. The plan is to push the hotline’s reach way past the five boroughs, hooking up people with travel, cash, and hotel rooms so they can get their healthcare sorted out, no matter where they’re coming from.
But let’s keep it a buck: the politicians are already tripping over their own numbers. Mamdani’s office put out a press release saying the state's yearly cut for the program is $220,000. But over at Governor Hochul’s office, their press release says the state is putting up $250,000. That’s a whole $30,000 difference. You would think with almost half a million dollars on the table, these high-paid bureaucrats could get their math straight before hitting send.
They dropped this news right on the four-year anniversary of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade. Ever since that Dobbs decision came down, New York has been trying to act like the ultimate sanctuary. They’re running this confidential hotline like a full-service travel agency for reproductive care, and the streets are definitely using it. The Hub has already clocked over 10,400 calls and almost 5,000 live chats.
And real talk, the demand is coming from all over. The data shows that 25 percent of the people calling this hotline are actually hits from outside of New York State. More than half of everyone hitting them up are trying to get medication abortions. Since other states are locking down on clinics, sisters from all over the country are looking to New York for a lifeline.
This whole situation is turning into a major interstate turf war. New York has these "shield laws" on the books that let local doctors mail out abortion pills to states where it's banned. Pro-life groups found out that these shield laws have already let over 330,000 pills slip through to banned states. New York is basically telling other states' laws to step off.
Of course, the other side is furious. Politicians like former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy are on TV claiming that Mamdani and the democratic socialists are running the whole show in New York now. Down in Florida, GOP candidates are bragging that they’re gonna shut down every single clinic if they get into office, which only makes the clash hotter.
Meanwhile, the legal drama is getting real. Governor Hochul recently had to sign a law to protect New York pill prescribers because a doctor in Louisiana actually got indicted for mailing pills. New York is putting up a shield for its doctors, but the legal beef is getting messy.
Mayor Mamdani made sure to let everyone know where he stands, calling the Supreme Court's moves a disaster. "Four years ago, the disastrous Dobbs decision stripped away a fundamental right and put reproductive health care out of reach for millions of Americans across this country," Mamdani said. "Since then, New York has led the fight to protect abortion care. On this anniversary, we are expandi..."
